Borrowing geometry of the nautilus, it is possible to create a semi-private and secluded space without traditional forms of enclosure. In the midst of bustling urban scenery, the nautilus provides a safe space to anonymously reveal one’s secret. The installation has 3 components. The nautilus ‘booth,’ an analog typewriter supplied with perforated paper, and a drop box. Individuals are encouraged to enter the both, anonymously type a secret, tear off the secret and place it in the box. Each morning, the box is opened and the secrets are stapled to the outside of the booth. The booth, made from reclaimed wooden pallets, is reminiscent of the ubiquitous urban artifact in Montreal, the utility pole.
Just as a utility pole is a way of communicating with the immediate community, the nautilus allows us to share our deepest secrets in the core of one of Montreal’s most trafficked spaces: Gare Central. The process is simple. Type a secret and tear off the secret along the perforated lines. Drop the secret in the box located next to the typewriter. Each morning the secrets are removed from the box and stapled to the outside of the booth. Over the two week installation period, the booth will become populated with things we so urgently want to share, but want to do so anonymously.
