The togSPINE expands upon the TOGS design by increasing the size of gallery space. By nestling four modules inside of one another, a display surface of 360 square feet grows to 1,440 square feet. When deployed, the nested modules pull out from each other. The modules are further subdivided into panels. All are connected by hinges, allowing for the gallery to kink, flex and snake. The gallery is a flexible space which can accommodate various sites. By hinging the module at 4ft, 6ft and 10ft sections, each artist can select the panel size appropriate to their work. As the user meanders through each exhibit, views emerge to City Hall, Lady Bird Johnson Lake and downtown Austin. The kinks in the gallery create intimate space for performance art and installations.
REUSE AND TRAFFIC CALMING: In Austin, cars rule the urban landscape. In an attempt to reintroduce the pedestrian to the city, after Art Week Austin the togSPINE will take to the streets! Modules, wide enough for a car, will be unhinged and placed around Austin where high velocity traffic and pedestrians compete. An artistic speed hump drive through, time traffic will be slowed, reclaiming the streets for pedestrians; spawning a creative synergy between art and pedestrians.
