Balance Architects is a multidisciplinary architecture and design practice based in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 2018, we've completed over 200,000 SF of buildings in and around Boston, with dozens more currently in design and construction. We are committed to designing elegant, high performance, contemporary buildings that uniquely address our client's needs. We believe in the power of design to improve and transform the way we live, work, and play. Our approach is collaborative, inclusive, solutions oriented and we love what we do.

Philip Sima
Founder Architect + Certified Passive House Consultant Philip Sima is a Registered Architect and Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC). Phil was first exposed to the world of building while working in construction during summers as a student at McGill University. After graduating from McGill, with a degree in environmental studies, and a passion for building, he worked as a carpenter with a 'green thumb' for Piche Construction in Montreal for several years. Seeking to expand upon these experiences and work on larger projects, he pursued a Masters in Architecture with an emphasis in sustainability from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to forming Balance Architects, Phil has had the pleasure of practicing architecture with some of the most talented teams, clients, and professionals all across the globe. He has worked on award winning projects and competitions, both in Boston and abroad. |
Chad Wulleman
Co-Founder Architect Chad Wulleman began his journey by studying both civil engineering and fine arts before later pursuing a Masters degree in architecture at Wentworth Institure of Technology. In effort to further expand his knowledge of the built environment he would spend a few years working in the construction field, focusing on the relationships between designers and contractors. His wide breadth of knowledge from various fields is something that allows him to treat each project as a unique problem, with a variety of possible solutions. Prior to forming Balance Architects, Chad had the pleasure of working with a variety of talents teams throughout the Northeast on projects throughout the nation. |
James Bailey
Project Manager James Bailey's introduction to architecture began working as a framer during summers where he learned the fundamentals of light frame construction and the relationship between construction documents and the built form. James went on to receive his Master’s degree in Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology. Soon after graduation, he travelled cross country to California where he spent four years working for an award winning architecture firm that specializes in mega mansions in Los Angeles and across Southern California. It was there that he was exposed to the professional practice of architecture and began to appreciate finer construction details both in the field and on the computer. Since returning to Massachusetts, he has worked for many talented design teams with a focus on single family residential and mid-sized mixed use developments in and around Boston. |
Rongshan Zhang
Architectural Designer Rongshan Zhang began her story with architecture in Shanghai, China, where she studied urban planning in Tongji University before getting her Master of Architecture degree from University of California, Berkeley. With degrees in both Architecture and Urban Planning, she has a strong interest in the role architecture could play in cities. During her school years, she spent a lot of time visiting different countries and cities in Asia, Europe and the US, and eventually decided to make Boston the starting point of her professional career. As a member of Balance Architects, Rongshan is excited to work with a variety of talented teams and clients to help make cities a better place. |
