Regardless of the snow and cold in Montreal, it is the bitter bite of a winter wind that can make a walk to the depanneur feel like a hike up mount Everest or a jaunt to school or work feel like an arctic expedition.
Danse proposes to celebrate this formidable force by transforming it into a kinetic ballet of light and movement. 300 wind vanes will sway in sync with the winter wind, illuminating this hidden force. Made from folded lightweight sheet aluminum, these reflective vanes rotate to face the direction of the wind.
Arranged in a standard grid and set on poles all at the same height, gusts are mapped by the pattern of rotating vanes and the fluidity of the Montreal wind is illuminated by a seductive dance in the sky . During the day these movements are enhanced by shadows and reflections cast upon the surfaces and occupants of Place des Arts.
Inside, one has the feeling of being swept up into a river, a serene connection with a natural process in the middle of an urban plaza. Viewed from the buildings above, the movements appear like that of a school of fish or flock of birds, a synchronized fluid movement that is marked by sudden anomalies instigated by a change in wind direction.
